Crashed your work van or truck? What’s different about commercial smash repair

Your delivery van's parked sideways on the side of the Princes Freeway with a caved-in driver's door. It's Tuesday morning. You've got jobs booked through to Friday. The panel beater you've used for the family Camry takes one look at the photos you send through and says they don't really do commercials.

This is the call we get most often from tradies, fleet managers and small business owners across Melbourne's west. Truck and commercial smash repair is genuinely different from car repair, and most workshops aren't set up for it. Here's what changes when the vehicle off the road is also the one earning you money.

Why truck smash repair isn't just car repair on a bigger scale

Three things separate commercial vehicle smash repair from passenger car work, and they all matter when you're calculating how long the vehicle will be off the road.

Body construction is the first. Most modern cars are unibody, where the chassis and body are integrated. Commercial vehicles up to and including light trucks are usually body-on-chassis, which changes how impact damage propagates and how repairs are sequenced. A side-on hit to a unibody car bends the structure; the same hit to a body-on-chassis truck might leave the chassis fine and the body separately repairable, or the opposite, depending on the impact point.

Parts availability is the second. Common ute and van panels are usually fine. Less common light commercials, particularly mid-life Hino, Isuzu N-series and Fuso models, can sit waiting for a panel to ship from a national parts hub or from overseas. We'll quote you a realistic timeline based on what's actually available, not a best-case figure.

Livery and signage is the third. A signed van isn't the same paint job as a plain one. Colour matching across vinyl, factory paint and freshly sprayed panels is harder than matching one new panel on a single colour, and signage often needs to come off before paint and go back on after.

Workshop repair in progress on Isuzu truck

What we accept at the Truganina workshop

The truck smash repairs side of the workshop covers everything from light commercial up to heavy rigid trucks:

  • Utes and vans: HiLux, Ranger, Transit, HiAce, Sprinter, Master.
  • Light commercial trucks under 8 tonnes GVM: Hino 300 series, Isuzu N-series, Fuso Canter, Iveco Daily.
  • Medium rigid trucks over 8 tonnes GVM with two axles: Hino 500, Isuzu F-series mid-range, Fuso Fighter.
  • Heavy rigid trucks with three or more axles.
  • Body-mounted equipment: toolbox replacements, rack repair, beacon and light bar reinstallation, signage.

If you drive it on a C, LR, MR or HR licence, we can repair it. Heavy combination prime movers are looked at case by case depending on the damage and access.

Common damage patterns we see on commercial vehicles

The damage profile on commercial work is different from passenger cars in pattern, frequency and severity:

  • Kerb scrapes from urban delivery work. Tight loading zones, narrow CBD streets, parking sensors that don't account for high sills.
  • Side panel and door damage from loading bay incidents. Forklifts, dock plates, swung pallet jacks.
  • Rollover and tip-over damage on rural deliveries. Soft shoulders, off-camber driveways, overloaded trays.
  • Roof damage from low clearances. Awnings, drive-throughs, multi-storey carparks signed for cars only.
  • Body-mounted equipment damage. Toolboxes torn off ute trays, racks bent in tunnel strikes, beacons snapped on tree branches.

The repair sequence on these is rarely just panel work. A loading bay strike that creases a side panel often also bends the rear suspension on that side. A tunnel strike that flattens a beacon usually pulled the wiring loom with it. Workshops that only do panel repair miss this and hand the truck back with mechanical issues unaddressed. Because we run both panel and mechanical under the same roof, the post-collision wheel alignment, suspension repair and electrical work get done in one place rather than shuffled between separate trades.

The downtime equation

Cheap repair that takes two weeks is usually worse than a more expensive repair that takes four days, if the vehicle is your earner. Most operators we work with run a rough number for daily revenue lost when a vehicle is off the road. The calculation is usually simple:

Total cost = quoted repair + (daily revenue loss × days off the road)

We'll give you both numbers when you ask. A faster timeline often costs more in labour but less in total downtime. A slower timeline might mean waiting on parts that aren't urgent. The right answer depends on your jobs booked, your replacement options and how exposed your business is to a single vehicle going down.

Insurance for commercial work: business use vs commercial motor

These are two different products and they cover different things.

Business use (extension on personal car policy)Commercial motor insurance
Typical usePersonal vehicle used occasionally for work (sales reps, mobile services)Vehicle used primarily or exclusively as a business asset (couriers, trades, delivery, fleets)
Vehicle types coveredCars, sometimes utesCars, utes, vans, light trucks, specialist plant
Cover for goods carriedUsually excluded or limitedOften included or available as an extension
Loading and unloading coverUsually excludedOften included
Multiple vehiclesOne vehicle per policy in most casesSingle policy can cover up to 15+ vehicles in fleet form

For trucks over 4.5 tonnes GVM, neither product applies. You need a heavy vehicle policy, often arranged through a broker. Quotes from us come ex-GST for ABN holders claiming GST credits, and excess is paid to the workshop directly when the vehicle is collected. The balance is invoiced to the insurer.

Loan vehicles and like-for-like replacement

A signwriter in a sedan isn't going to finish the job. If you need a like-for-like replacement (load-rated, signed, set up for your gear), we'll work with you on what's available and what your insurer will fund. If you just need any vehicle to get the driver from A to B for a few days, that's faster and cheaper.

Standing arrangements for fleet operators

For operators running three or more vehicles, fleet smash repair works better as a standing arrangement than a one-off transaction:

  • Priority booking when a vehicle is off the road.
  • Agreed turnaround windows on common damage patterns.
  • Pre-approved repair authority up to a nominated dollar value, which removes a layer of insurer back-and-forth.
  • Single point of contact for quoting, booking and progress updates.

The cost of one vehicle being off the road longer than necessary usually exceeds any savings from shopping around on labour rates.

How to verify a commercial repair workshop

Victoria has no mandatory licensing scheme for panel beating, so the credentials worth checking are VACC membership, manufacturer approvals where relevant, and industry accreditation. For trucks specifically, ask whether the workshop has a chassis-straightening jig rated for the weight you're driving. Most car-only shops don't.

Frequently asked questions

For light commercial damage with parts in stock, three to seven working days is realistic. Larger trucks, heavy structural damage or special-order panels can extend to three weeks or more. We give you a realistic timeline at the quote, not a best-case one.

Yes. Toolboxes, racks, ladder mounts, beacon bars, signage backing and dual-battery wiring damaged in the same incident can be quoted and repaired together rather than sent to separate trades.

No. Business use is an extension on a personal car policy and is designed for cars and utes used occasionally for work. Vehicles over 4.5 tonnes GVM need heavy vehicle insurance, usually arranged through a broker. Check your policy schedule before assuming you're covered.

Yes. The Truganina workshop runs both panel and mechanical, so post-collision wheel alignment, suspension repair, ECU diagnostics and brake work get done in the same building rather than shuffled out to a separate mechanic. For commercial vehicles where downtime matters, this saves days.

Heavy rigid trucks have access. If you're not sure whether your vehicle fits, send a photo with dimensions and we'll confirm before you book.

For ABN holders claiming GST credits, quotes are presented ex-GST. For non-ABN holders, quotes include GST. Either way, the figure on the page is what gets invoiced to the insurer.
