Dent repair costs in Truganina, and is it worth fixing?

You come back to your car in a shopping centre car park, and there it is. A fresh dent in the door where a trolley or another car door has caught it. Your first thought is usually the same one. Is this worth fixing, and what will it cost?

Here is the short answer. Most small dent repairs in Truganina run from about $150 to $500 when the paint is still intact. Once the panel needs paint, you are looking at roughly $500 to $1,500 or more. Whether it is worth paying for comes down to three things: the paint, where the dent sits, and what you plan to do with the car.

What affects the cost of a dent repair?

No two dents cost the same. A few things decide where your repair lands in that range.

  • Size and location. A small, round dent on a flat part of a door is the cheapest kind to fix. A dent near a panel edge, a body line, or a curved section takes more time and skill, so it costs more.
  • Whether the paint is broken. This is the big one. If the metal is dented but the paint is unbroken, the dent can sometimes be pushed back out without repainting. This is called paintless dent removal, and it suits shallow dents with no paint damage. It is the cheaper path when a dent qualifies for it, and it is one of the repair options we offer. Once the paint is cracked, chipped, or scratched, the panel needs filling, sanding, and repainting, which adds cost.
  • Reshape or replace. Most dents can be reshaped. But a deep crease, a torn panel, or damage across a large area can mean the panel is replaced instead of repaired. A new panel plus paint is the most expensive outcome, and it takes the longest.
  • Access behind the panel. To push a dent out cleanly, there has to be room to reach the back of it. Some dents sit behind trim, wiring, or bracing that has to come off first. More labour means a higher quote.

Dent repair price ranges

These are rough market ranges for Melbourne, not Street Elite's pricing. Every quote depends on your car and the exact damage, so treat these as a guide only.

Type of dent Typical range
Small dent, paint intact $150 – $500
Larger dent needing paint $500 – $1,500
Sharp crease, panel edge, or panel replacement $1,500 and up

Luxury and prestige vehicles, aluminium panels, and hard-to-match colours can push a repair above these ranges. The size and depth of the dent matter more than the size of the car. A coin-sized ding and a dent that spans half a door are very different jobs. The only way to know your number is to have the dent looked at.

When a dent is worth fixing, and when to leave it

Not every dent is worth paying to fix. Being straight about that saves you money.

Fix it when the paint is broken, when the dent is on a panel you see every day, or when you are about to sell the car or hand back a lease. A clean, dent-free body lifts what a buyer or dealer will offer, often by more than the repair costs. On a lease return, an unfixed dent can also be charged back to you at end-of-lease rates, which are rarely cheaper than a workshop quote.

You can usually leave it when the paint is intact, the dent is small, and it sits somewhere you barely notice. A minor ding on a car you plan to keep for years is not urgent. If it does not bother you and the metal is sealed, there is no harm in living with it for now.

The one dent worth acting on quickly is any dent where the paint has broken. That is not about looks. It is about rust.

Why broken paint changes the maths

Paint is what keeps water and air off the steel underneath. Once the paint is cracked or chipped, bare metal is exposed. Through a wet Melbourne winter, that metal starts to rust, and rust spreads under the surrounding paint where you cannot see it.

A small dent with a paint chip, left for a year, can turn into a much larger repair once rust takes hold. At that point the shop is not just reshaping metal. It is cutting out rust and rebuilding the area. If the paint is broken, it is worth sealing or repairing sooner rather than later. If the paint is intact, you have time.

Should you claim on insurance for a small dent?

For a single small dent, often no. Many comprehensive policies carry an excess of around $600 to $900, which can be more than the repair itself. Paying out of pocket keeps your claims history clean and can protect your no-claim discount. For bigger damage, or several dents at once, a claim can make more sense. Your policy's product disclosure statement, or PDS, is the document that sets out your excess and what is covered, so read it before you decide.

Getting a dent repair looked at in Truganina

Most dents from daily driving come from the same places. The tight shopping centre car parks around Truganina and Tarneit, where doors and trolleys catch panels at close range, are the usual source. These are often small, paint-intact dents, which are the cheapest and quickest dent repairs to sort out.

If you have picked one up, the fastest way to know your options is a quick look. Send a photo or drop in, and you will get a straight answer on whether the dent suits a paintless repair or needs paint, and what it will cost. Catching a paint-broken dent early is the difference between a small repair now and a rust problem later.

My partner had dints repaired on his Ford Ranger couple of years ago at Street Elite Body repairs and I just had my car repaired through insurance there too. I had some previous damage plus recent accident damage fixed. I wouldn’t trust my car anywhere else. Good customer service and immaculate work. ( Last pic is the finished work. ). HIGHLY recommend.

Jason and his team to the rescue - Had a very awfully bad experience with a previous panel collision place and they did a horrible dodgy job. Jason and team not only is honest and transparent but the customer service is top notch. I will definitely be coming back to Street Elite and would recommend business to close family and friends. Thank you again Jason and team and for giving me a better peace of mind to drive my car.
