Is your car safe to drive after a crash?

A car that starts and steers is not automatically safe to drive after a crash. The parts that fail first are the ones you cannot see from the driver’s seat. A cut tyre sidewall. A bent steering arm. A brake line that has been nicked. A seatbelt that has already done its job. Some of those change how the car feels straight away. Others feel fine for a week and then do not. Telling them apart takes five minutes in the driveway, and a proper look underneath before the car sees a freeway.

It is the evening after a knock. The car is on the driveway. There is a dent in the guard, and it drove home without complaining. Work starts at eight tomorrow.

Plenty of people reach for the same question at that point: is my car roadworthy after an accident? That is two questions wearing one coat, and each has its own answer.

The scene itself is a separate job, and so is the paperwork. If you have not done that part, start with what to do after a car accident in Melbourne. Come back here once the car is home.

Can I drive my car after a minor accident?

A driver checks the front tyre and damaged guard of an SUV with a torch in a driveway after a minor crash.

Six checks, no tools, five minutes with a torch. They will not prove the car is fine. They tell you whether it is safe to move at all.

  • Look under the car for fluid. Clear or light brown near a wheel is likely brake fluid. That ends the job there. Green, orange or pink is coolant. Red is power steering or gearbox oil. Black is engine oil. Any of them means something has been opened up.
  • Check every tyre, and the wheel behind it. Run a hand around the outer wall and the inner one. A cut, a bulge or a kerb scuff all matter. A tyre that looks perfect from the front can be ruined on its inside edge. Check the rim for a crack or a flat spot.
  • Open and shut the bonnet and the boot. If either no longer sits square, or needs a shove to catch, the panel around it has moved. The impact travelled further than the paint did.
  • Have someone watch the lights while you work the switches. Headlights, brake lights, reversing lights and indicators, front and back. A broken lens is a small job. A light that died after a rear knock usually means pulled wiring.
  • Sit in the car with the wheels straight and look at the steering wheel. If the badge sits off-centre while the car is straight, something in the steering or the suspension has shifted.
  • Note any warning light that came on and stayed on. Airbag, ABS and stability control are the ones that count. A light that arrived with the bang is reporting a fault, not a glitch.

What makes a car unsafe to drive rather than just damaged

A car with a torn, deflated front tyre and scraped bodywork waits beside a flatbed tow truck.

Damaged means the car does not look right. Unsafe means it cannot be trusted to stop, to steer or to hold the road. A car can be badly dented and mechanically sound, or barely marked and unsafe to move.

Four faults mean stop. Arrange a tow rather than a drive.

  • The brake pedal has changed. A pedal that sinks, travels further, or feels soft means fluid is escaping or air is in the line. An impact can nick a brake hose without leaving a mark you would spot. There is more in the guide to brake wear and replacement.
  • A tyre has a cut, a bulge or exposed cord. Victoria’s vehicle standards require tyres to be free of deep cuts, cracks, bulges and other damage likely to make them fail. Sidewall and shoulder repairs on a car tyre are not accepted. A damaged sidewall means a new tyre, not a patch.
  • The steering does not feel right. A wheel that fights you, a hard pull to one side, or a clunk through the column all point at a bent steering or suspension part. Those parts hold each wheel in place. When one moves, the rest carry load they were never built for.
  • A restraint has fired. A seatbelt locked solid, a buckle pulled in and stuck, or an airbag light on since the impact all say the same thing. Victoria’s vehicle standards treat a deployed pretensioner, a locked retractor or a lit airbag lamp as unacceptable. Seatbelt parts cannot be repaired, only replaced. Whether the car may lawfully be driven before that work is done is not set out plainly anywhere. Treat a fired restraint as a stop.

The next group is different. Drive gently, keep the trip local, and book the car in this week.

  • The steering wheel sits a few degrees off-centre while the car still tracks and stops straight. The geometry has moved. Left alone it will eat the inside edge of a front tyre within weeks.
  • There is a new knock over bumps. Something has loosened rather than broken. It is far cheaper found at that stage.
  • A panel is fouling a tyre. A pushed-in guard or a dropped bumper can touch a tyre on full lock. Turn the wheel both ways and look.
  • A light or an indicator is out. Small, and also the fault a police officer notices first.

Is my car roadworthy after an accident?

Victorian number plate and registration label on a parked car with a suburban street in the background

In Victoria a certificate of roadworthiness is needed when a vehicle is sold, when it is re-registered, and sometimes to clear a vehicle defect notice. A crash is not on that list, and no rule turns a dented guard into an inspection you have to book.

The second half matters more tonight. A vehicle used on a Victorian road has to be in a safe and roadworthy condition, certificate or no certificate. VicRoads puts that duty on the owner, at all times. Driving a car that is not in that condition is an offence. Police can issue a vehicle defect notice on the spot. A defect notice carries a time after which the car cannot be driven at all, and some are cleared only by producing a certificate.

So nobody will make you get a roadworthy after a crash. That is not the same as the car being allowed on the road. The certificate is paperwork for a transaction. The condition is a duty you carry every time you turn the key.

What a panel quote does not cover

Workshop estimator with a tablet inspecting the side of a damaged car with the front wheel on full lock

A smash repair estimate prices what an assessor can see. The panels, the paint, and the parts that come off to reach them. It is not a mechanical inspection. Alignment, suspension and braking checks sit outside it unless somebody adds them, and nobody adds them for you.

Wheel alignment is the usual casualty. Alignment is the set of angles that decide how each wheel meets the road, and a low-speed shunt can move them. Around the West Gate Tunnel merges and the M80 entry points, the familiar result is a car that drives away from the scene, feels normal all week, and has chewed the inside shoulder of a front tyre by the end of the month.

Ask for the mechanical side when you book the estimate, not when you collect the car. Some workshops handle smash repairs in Truganina and mechanical servicing on one site, so it is one booking rather than two.

“There’s panel damage from a knock, and I’d like the suspension, brakes and tyres checked at the same time.”

What happens after the repair is its own subject. There is a longer read on the mechanical damage a panel-only shop might miss, covering the checks worth making before you accept the car back.

Get it looked at before the next freeway run

Go back out to the driveway. If the six checks came up clean, and nothing in the stop list applies, the car is probably fine for a short local trip in daylight. That is not the same as fine for the M80 tomorrow morning. The difference is a set of angles and a few mounting points nobody has looked at yet.

Book the panel damage and the mechanical check together, before the first long drive rather than after it. Street Elite Bodyworks is a panel beater in Truganina that services cars as well, and the contact page carries the workshop’s hours.

Frequently asked questions

Is it illegal to drive a damaged car in Victoria?

It can be. The rule turns on whether the vehicle is in a safe and roadworthy condition, not on how battered it looks. That duty applies every day, not only at inspection time. An officer who decides a car falls short can issue a defect notice on the spot.

What damage makes a car undriveable?

Anything that takes away braking, steering or a sound tyre. A pedal that has changed underfoot. A wheel that will not point straight. A sidewall with a cut or a bulge in it. A restraint that has already fired. Each one is reason enough to call for a tow.

Will my car pass a roadworthy after a crash?

A crash on its own never puts a car in front of a tester. The question only arises if you were selling the vehicle or re-registering it anyway. Where that applies, the damage is judged against the same standards as any other car, and anything unrepaired that affects safety has to be sorted first.

Can I keep driving with the airbag warning light on?

Treat it as a stop. The light reports a fault in the system meant to protect you in the next impact. Victoria’s vehicle standards do not accept a car presented with that light showing.

Jason and his team to the rescue - Had a very awfully bad experience with a previous panel collision place and they did a horrible dodgy job. Jason and team not only is honest and transparent but the customer service is top notch. I will definitely be coming back to Street Elite and would recommend business to close family and friends. Thank you again Jason and team and for giving me a better peace of mind to drive my car.
